Early Reading and Phonics

At Roxton CE Academy we use Read Write Inc. Phonics to teach early reading. Read Write Inc. Phonics is a DfE-validated systematic synthetic phonics programme with a wholeschool approach to teaching early reading and writing, designed to ensure progress for every child, in every primary school. Its approach to phonics provides comprehension, handwriting, spelling and composition to get your child reading, writing and speaking fluently.

Year 1 and 2 Phonics Screening Check

In June, the current Year 1 pupils will take part in the Government Phonics Screening Check, alongside any Year 2 children who were not at the expected level when they were in Year 1. This is a check which involves children reading 40 decodable words using their phonic knowledge. The 40 words will include 20 'nonsense' words in order to ensure use of phonics as opposed to sight recognition of words.  This is a progress check to identify those children who are not at the expected level in their reading.  The results will be reported to parents.

Any child working significantly below the level of the screening check, may be dis-applied, with the acknowledgment of the parent/carer.
